Santa Fe
Railroad Badge / Bat Masterson Badge By 1860 there were 30,626
miles of railroad in the United States, and a good chunk of that was along
the Santa Fe railroad. This was more than three times the milage than existed
just 10 years before!
Theft was
rampant and the losses in dollars of freight, parcels and luggage were
overwhelming to the railroad companies. So, left to protect themselves,
they contracted railroad policemen. Two of the most famous of the Special
Agents hired to protect the railroads were Bat Masterson and Allen Pinkerton.
